This day transcends a simple holiday; it is a profound tribute to the resilience of the Mongolian spirit. It commemorates the historic moment in 1911 when a nation, after enduring 220 years of Manchu Qing Dynasty rule, reclaimed its sovereignty and revived its ancestral statehood.
The 1911 Revolution: A Turning Point in History
On December 29, 1911, historically recorded as the ninth day of the mid-winter month in the Year of the Female Iron Pig, the Mongolian people successfully declared their independence. This was the triumphant result of a long-standing national movement.
The Sovereign Leader: The 8th Bogd Jebtsundamba Khutuktu, the revered spiritual leader of Mongolia, was enthroned as the Bogd Khan (Holy King). He became the supreme head of both church and state for the newly established Bogd Khanate.
The Moment of Liberation: Seizing the momentum of the Xinhai Revolution that signaled the end of the Qing Empire, Mongolian nobles and high-ranking lamas united to expel the Manchu Amban (governor) from the capital, Ikh Khüree (modern-day Ulaanbaatar).
Foundation of a Modern State: With independence came the birth of a modern administrative structure. Mongolia immediately established its first five ministries: Interior, Foreign Affairs, Finance, Justice, and War, solidifying its place as a recognized political entity on the global stage.
The Legacy of December 29
This anniversary honors the visionaries of 1911 who laid the foundation for the freedom Mongolia enjoys today. It is a day of national pride, celebrated with traditional wrestling, state ceremonies at Sükhbaatar Square, and a collective reflection on the "Eternal Blue Sky" that watches over a free and independent nation.
#Independence: The bedrock of our national competitive advantage.
#Honoring the past, architecting the future.
#114 years of sovereign leadership.
