The Gobi Desert has once again transformed into a vibrant stage for one of the world’s most unique winter spectacles. This year marks the 29th anniversary of the "Thousand Camel Festival" (Tumen Temeenii Bayar), an event that has evolved from a local conservation effort into a world-renowned celebration of nomadic heritage and winter tourism.
At Jamogrand Travel, our crew was on the ground in Dalanzadgad this February to witness this incredible event firsthand, capturing the magic of the Gobi winter to share with our travelers.
More Than Just a Festival: A Hub for Heritage and Breeding
While the races and polo matches grab the headlines, the heart of the festival lies in the gathering of herders from over 60 soums. For the nomadic community, this is a vital professional summit.
One of the most important traditions we observed was the exchange of male camels (Buur). Herders use this gathering to trade high-quality breeding stock, which is essential for:
Genetic Diversity: Exchanging male camels between distant regions prevents inbreeding and strengthens the health of the herds.
Improving the Breed: Selecting "Best Buur" (uncastrated male) and "Best Inge" (female) ensures that only the strongest, most resilient animals lead the next generation.
Knowledge Sharing: It’s a time for herders to discuss grazing techniques, winter survival, and the preservation of the rare two-humped Bactrian camel.
2026 Festival Highlights: Jamogrand Field Report
The 2026 celebration was larger than ever, featuring record-breaking participation:
The Grand Parade: A sea of over 1,000 camels led by herders in exquisite winter deels.
Camel Polo & Racing: The desert floor shook as camels competed in high-stakes races, including the 15km mature camel race.
Nomadic Skill Competitions: We watched the "Camel Relay," where teams demonstrated the ancient art of lassoing, taming, and loading a full ger onto a camel train in record time.
Cultural Excellence: Beyond the sports, the Camel Airag Festival offered a taste of the Gobi’s finest fermented milk and dairy delicacies.
Latest News from the Gobi
Population Milestone: The Mongolian Prime Minister announced at the opening that the national camel population has officially surpassed 501,000, nearly doubling in recent years thanks to these conservation efforts.
National Recognition: This year, the President of Mongolia officially designated January 24th as "National Camel Day."
A Global Event: Over 8,000 attendees, including 200+ international tourists, braved the -25°C temperatures to witness the 2026 ceremonies.
