Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, In a historic and ceremonial occasion, H.E. Khurelsukh Ukhnaa, President of Mongolia, and First Lady Luvsandorj Bolortsetseg officially welcomed His Majesty Emperor Naruhito and Her Majesty Empress Masako of Japan at Sukhbaatar Square in the heart of the capital.

The official welcoming ceremony began with a report by the Commander of the State Honor Guard, followed by the performance of the national anthems of Mongolia and Japan. The President, First Lady, and Their Majesties paid tribute to Mongolia’s State Ceremonial Military White Banner—a powerful symbol of Mongolian statehood. His Majesty the Emperor and Her Majesty the Empress then reviewed the State Honor Guard.

The ceremony was attended by senior members of the Government of Mongolia, recipients of Imperial Orders conferred by the Emperor of Japan, and prominent Mongolian-born Grand Champions (Yokozuna) of Japan’s professional sumo. Among them were the 68th Yokozuna Asashoryu Dagvadorj Dolgorsuren, the 69th Yokozuna Hakuho Davaajargal Munkhbat, and the 70th Yokozuna Harumafuji Bayambadorj Davaanyam—individuals who embody the deep people-to-people ties between the two nations.

Following the formal ceremony, President Khurelsukh and His Majesty Emperor Naruhito visited the statue of Great Emperor Chinggis Khaan, where they paid tribute to Mongolia’s founding father. Subsequently, His Majesty signed the Book of Honored Guests at the State Palace, marking the occasion of this historic visit.

As part of their State Visit, Their Majesties will attend the opening ceremony of the Naadam Festival as Guests of Honor—a rare and significant gesture reflecting the close bond between Mongolia and Japan. Their itinerary includes visits to the Gandantegchinlen Monastery, Khustai National Park, the Mongolia–Japan Hospital, and various educational institutions, allowing them to engage deeply with Mongolia’s rich culture, environment, and society.

Earlier, His Majesty Emperor Naruhito visited the Chinggis Khaan National Museum, the Ulaanbaatar Water Supply and Sewerage Authority, and the Gachuurt Water Source site, highlighting Japan’s longstanding support for Mongolia’s sustainable development and infrastructure.

Their Majesties will also meet with members of the Japanese community residing in Mongolia and Mongolian citizens who are actively contributing to the strengthening of bilateral cooperation.

Mongolia–Japan Relations: A Partnership Built on Trust and Shared Values

Diplomatic relations between Mongolia and Japan were established in 1972, marking the beginning of a partnership grounded in mutual respect, shared democratic values, and a commitment to peace. Over the decades, this relationship has grown from a Comprehensive Partnership (1996) to a Strategic Partnership (2010), culminating in the ongoing development of a "Special Strategic Partnership for Peace and Prosperity" since 2022, which emphasizes people-centered cooperation.

Japan has been a steadfast development partner for Mongolia, providing significant support in areas such as education, health, infrastructure, disaster resilience, and governance. Cultural and educational exchanges, including the popularity of Mongolian sumo wrestlers in Japan and the increasing number of Mongolian students studying in Japan, further strengthen the human dimension of the partnership.

This State Visit by Their Majesties not only celebrates the friendship between the Imperial Household of Japan and the Mongolian people but also reaffirms the enduring ties and the shared vision for a peaceful, prosperous, and collaborative future between the two nations.
