Mongolia is one of the lesser-known destinations for American travelers. But that's the attraction of this country. The less you know about the place, the more you can see, learn, and experience. Mongolia has recently opened up to the world, with United Airlines flying to Ulaanbaatar, the capital city, being one door.
This country is on the other side of the globe, and your flight will add an average of 3,500 miles, depending on the state. The stopover gives you the perfect opportunity to combine your Mongolia trip with Japan, which is two countries in one go. With both countries not requiring a visa for 90 days, it is a matter of flight and ground booking. The connection time varies between 45 minutes and 48 hours, giving a good window to have a short visit in Tokyo.
For 2025, the flight starts in May and ends in October, the best time to travel in Mongolia.
The flight cost starts as low as 1500 USD in economy class from Los Angeles and San Francisco, a little higher from the East Coast. Comparably, there are options of flying with Turkish Airlines via Istanbul, Korean Air via Seoul, Air China via Beijing, or combining with Mongolian Airlines via Hong Kong, Shanghai, or even Frankfurt, depending on your preferred layovers. All in all, this new flight opens up a new destination for American travelers to explore with Star Alliance Airlines.
