On December 20, 2024, the Khushigiin Khundii Airport State-Owned Limited Liability Company of Mongolia, Narita International Airport Corporation of Japan, and Japan Airport Terminal Co., Ltd. signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance cooperation.
Under this agreement, the three parties will jointly organize training programs to improve the professional skills and service quality of employees at Chinggis Khaan International Airport in Mongolia. Tsenguuun Lamjav, CEO of Khushigiin Khundii Airport, highlighted that the airport recently underwent an audit by Skytrax, a globally recognized organization that rates airlines and airports, and was awarded a prestigious 4-star rating. This year, the airport also celebrated a milestone by welcoming its 2 millionth passenger.
Lamjav emphasized that Chinggis Khaan International Airport has met international standards for passenger handling and service quality. To maintain this level of excellence and further improve operations, the airport will learn from the advanced management practices of Narita and Haneda Airports, both among Japan's top 10 world-renowned airports.
As part of the collaboration, Narita Airport staff will participate in an exchange program, with both long-term and short-term training opportunities in Japan for Chinggis Khaan International Airport employees.
During the signing ceremony, Igawahara Masaru, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Mongolia, expressed his satisfaction with the airport's progress. "It is noteworthy that the two shareholder companies of Chinggis Khaan International Airport, built with a soft loan from the Government of Japan, are actively working to improve operations," he said. "I am pleased that this year’s passenger numbers have exceeded expectations, with two million passengers, putting it on par with international airports such as Osaka, Frankfurt, and Paris."
As of November 30, 2024, Chinggis Khaan International Airport had served 1,633,770 foreign and Mongolian passengers, and 389,627 domestic passengers, for a total of 2,023,397 passengers. Reaching the 2-million-passenger mark in a single year is a significant milestone in Mongolia's civil aviation history.
