The Gobi region of Övörkhangai Province is emerging as a promising destination for tourism development. This area is rich in breathtaking landscapes, unique natural formations, and valuable historical and cultural heritage sites.
According to the provincial Governor’s action plan, special-interest tourism will be developed by highlighting natural and paleontological attractions such as Khüren Khad Spring, Elsen Sand Therapy Area, the Arts Bogd Mountain Range, Zuunbogd Mountain, and Öösh Shakhlaga. Along these travel routes, private businesses have established tourist camps and resorts, warmly welcoming visitors from near and far.
This year, the “Gariid” resort, located on the therapeutic sands of Baruunbayan-Ulaan soum, hosted more than 1,500 visitors. In November, the resort also organized the “Future Speed” Camel Festival using its own resources, celebrating and promoting local traditions and nomadic heritage.
Meanwhile, the “Serven Khairkhan” ger camp in Bogd soum welcomed 354 international and 147 domestic tourists. Visitors can enjoy authentic experiences such as camel riding, tasting camel milk drinks, sampling dried camel milk curds, and learning how yarn is traditionally spun from camel wool.
One of Övörkhangai’s four main tourism routes focuses on the Gobi and western regions. This journey spans approximately 1,800 kilometers and takes 4 days and 3 nights to complete. Starting from Ulaanbaatar, the route passes through Arvaikheer, the ruins of Mazar City, Öösh Shakhlaga, the Arts Bogd Mountains, Zuunbogd Mountain, Emch Sand, Taatsiin Tsagaan Lake, Öshgögiin Ikh Zalaa, Önts Shilüüstei, Shargyn Tasarkhai, Shaamiin Spring, and the remains of Kublai Khan’s military city, before returning to Ulaanbaatar.
Along the way, travelers have the chance to experience a fascinating blend of pristine nature, ancient history, nomadic culture, and rare paleontological sites—making the Gobi of Övörkhangai a truly memorable destination.
