For decades, Mongolia has remained one of the final frontiers for North American travelersa destination of mythic proportions that required a marathon of flights and exhausting layovers. Starting in June 2026, Air Transat will make history by launching the first-ever direct service between Toronto Pearson (YYZ) and Ulaanbaatar (UBN). This isn't just a new route; it’s a direct bridge from the heart of Canada to the "Land of the Eternal Blue Sky," transforming a 25-hour odyssey into a seamless 13.5-hour journey.
The Journey: From the "6ix" to the Steppe
Historically, reaching Mongolia from Canada or the U.S. required a minimum of 24 to 30 hours of travel, usually involving a change of planes in Seoul, Istanbul, or Tokyo.
The new Air Transat service slashes that travel time by half, operating twice weekly (Thursdays and Sundays). This makes Mongolia a viable destination not just for long expeditions, but for two-week summer getaways that were previously logistically impossible.
The Aircraft: Air Transat is deploying the state-of-the-art Airbus A321LR (Long Range) for this mission. While the airline utilizes larger A330s elsewhere, the A321LR was chosen for its fuel efficiency and superior cabin comfort on long-haul routes, ensuring you arrive refreshed and ready for adventure.
Seamless Connections: Through Air Transat’s partnership with Porter Airlines, travelers from Vancouver, Montreal, New York, and Chicago can enjoy effortless one-stop connections through Toronto.
Why 2026 is the Year to Visit
The timing is legendary. 2026 marks the 820th Anniversary of the Great Mongol State and is a cornerstone of the "Years to Visit Mongolia" campaign.
Visa-Free Ease: Canadian citizens enjoy 30-day visa-free entry, while U.S. citizens can stay for up to 90 days. Booking a trip to Ulaanbaatar is now as simple as booking a flight to Europe.
The "Golden Triangle": The Mongolian government is fast-tracking infrastructure in the Khuvsgul, Arkhangai, and Selenge provinces. Expect smoother roads and world-class eco-lodges in the country's most stunning northern regions.
Digital Arrival: By mid-2026, Chinggis Khaan International Airport will be fully paperless. New Smart Gates and digital arrival cards ensure you spend less time in line and more time in the wild.
The Experience: Wild Landscapes, Modern Ease
Mongolia offers the ultimate luxury: unlimited space. In a world of crowded destinations, the Steppe remains untouched.
The Naadam Festival (July 11–15): Arriving in June places you perfectly for Mongolia's greatest celebration. Witness "The Three Manly Games"—wrestling, horse racing, and archery—as the nation celebrates the 820th anniversary of the Mongol Empire.
The Gobi Desert: Stand atop the "Flaming Cliffs" where the world’s first dinosaur eggs were discovered.
Nomadic Hospitality: Spend your nights in a luxury Ger (yurt) under a blanket of stars, experiencing a way of life that has remained unchanged for millennia.
Altai Mountains: In the far west, witness the ancient art of golden eagle hunting against a backdrop of snow-capped peaks.
