The White Moon Festival of the Year of the Blue Wooden Snake has arrived late; and it has coincided with a day marked by both Dashnyam and Balzhinyam, making it a time filled with many celebrations and strange coincidences. "Dashnyam" and "Balzhinyam" are traditional Mongolian terms, often used in the context of the lunar calendar and astrology, representing specific dates and auspicious events.
Dashnyam (Дашням) refers to one of the "auspicious days" in the Mongolian calendar. In Mongolian astrology, Dashnyam is a particularly favorable day, considered lucky for various activities like making important decisions, ceremonies, or starting new ventures.
Balzhinyam (Балжинням) is another term used in Mongolian astrology, representing another auspicious day, but it often is associated with a different set of circumstances or cosmic influence compared to Dashnyam. It is also a good day to take important actions or engage in celebrations.
In this context, the text is referring to the coincidence of these two auspicious days occurring on the same day, which is seen as a special or fortunate occurrence.
We won’t see such a White Moon Festival again soon, one that coincides with National Journalism Day and International Women’s Day on March 8. During these days of overlapping holidays, the sky and the earth are in harmony. At the beginning of the Year of the Snake, people and livestock thrive. The weather is favorable, with abundant snow melting quickly, softening the ground, and bringing forth the greenery. Livestock is well-fed, and farmers begin their grain work early, as this marks the beginning of a flourishing time.
The smoky season is coming to an end, and people in the capital city are rejoicing as they look out at the Four Mountains. As the saying goes, “When the axe is swinging, the ox rests,” it is a time when the pollution and haze are forgotten, and fresh air fills the lungs until the end of October. With the beginning of the new year, the snow has moistened the earth, and the clean days without dust continue.
Even in the countryside, the weather is clear, with rivers, lakes, and ponds flowing early. This is an occurrence not seen in recent years and is a result of the mild winter. However, as the saying goes, "Spring skies are deceptive," so while there are many overlapping holidays, it is important to stay alert and cautious, a point especially not forgotten by our herders.
